A court in Faridpur has sentenced a young man to life imprisonment for abducting and raping a college student, in a case that has drawn attention to violence against women and the lengthy judicial process involved in prosecuting such crimes. The court also imposed a fine of 10,000 taka, with an additional one-year prison term if the fine is not paid.
The verdict was delivered on Sunday at around noon by Judge Shamima Parveen of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Faridpur, who also serves as the District and Sessions Judge. The convicted individual, Sohel Sheikh, was present in the courtroom when the judgment was announced.
Sohel Sheikh, son of Mohammad Iqbal Sheikh, is a resident of Char Narandia village in Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur district. According to the prosecution, the court found sufficient evidence proving that he abducted and sexually assaulted the victim, who at the time was a first-year student at Boalmari Women’s College.
Court documents and the original complaint indicate that the incident took place on 10 September 2016. At approximately 5:00 p.m., the victim was returning home after attending private tuition classes. As she approached her home in Alfadanga, the accused forcibly placed her inside a private car and drove away.
Following the abduction, the victim’s father, Nazrul Islam, reportedly approached the family of the accused and demanded the immediate return of his daughter. However, his appeals were unsuccessful. According to the complaint, the victim was subsequently taken to various locations where she was repeatedly assaulted. During the investigation, it also emerged that there were attempts to traffic the victim abroad, adding further gravity to the allegations.
With no other option available, the victim’s father filed a formal case at Boalmari Police Station on 24 September 2016 under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Law enforcement authorities launched an investigation, gathering witness testimonies, medical reports, and other evidence that later formed the basis of the prosecution’s case in court.
The trial proceeded over several years, involving the examination of witnesses and presentation of documentary and forensic evidence. After reviewing all relevant materials, the tribunal concluded that the charges against the accused had been proven beyond reasonable doubt.
Public Prosecutor Golam Rabbani confirmed the authenticity of the verdict and stated that the prosecution had successfully demonstrated the accused’s guilt under the relevant provisions of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. He described the crime as “deeply reprehensible” and emphasised that such acts pose a serious threat to social stability and the safety of women.
Legal experts believe the ruling sends a strong message that crimes involving abduction, sexual violence, and attempted trafficking will face severe consequences under Bangladeshi law.
