Light Procession in Dhaka Honours Liberation War Martyrs

On the first day of the Great Victory Month, a light procession and lamp-lighting ceremony were held in Dhaka on Monday evening. The event was organised jointly by Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, and Bangladesh Jubo Union, reflecting a collective tribute to the nation’s Liberation War.

The procession commenced at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and proceeded to Shikha Chironton, with participants singing patriotic songs from the 1971 Liberation War and raising slogans commemorating the sacrifices of the nation’s freedom fighters. The event was marked by a solemn yet celebratory atmosphere, combining cultural expression with historical remembrance.

At a brief gathering, speakers emphasised the significance of the struggle that led to Bangladesh’s independence. They reminded attendees that after nine months of relentless resistance and the ultimate sacrifice of millions of martyrs, Pakistani forces surrendered, paving the way for the nation’s sovereignty.

Speakers also urged citizens to preserve the spirit and values of the Liberation War, particularly in the face of ongoing attempts to distort historical narratives. They stressed the importance of educating younger generations about the nation’s hard-won freedom and ensuring that the memory of the martyrs remains honoured.

The observance in Dhaka forms part of a broader nationwide series of commemorative activities marking the Great Victory Month, during which cultural programmes, discussions, and ceremonies are held to honour the nation’s history and heroes. These events serve both as a remembrance of the past and a reaffirmation of national identity and unity.
