Looking Back: A Year of Defining Moments in Music

The past year proved to be a particularly eventful one for the Bangladeshi music industry, marked by emotional farewells, long-awaited returns, personal revelations and moments of controversy. From celebrated artists reconsidering their careers to veteran musicians reappearing on stage, the year unfolded as a tapestry of triumphs, tribulations and transformation.

One of the most talked-about developments occurred last September, when popular singer and actor Tahsan Khan announced during a live concert in Australia that he was preparing to step away from music. The unexpected declaration immediately sparked widespread speculation. Addressing the ensuing rumours, Tahsan later clarified that he intended to gradually withdraw from both music and acting, signalling a reflective and measured transition rather than an abrupt departure. His personal life also attracted public attention this year, as he entered into marriage for the second time, once again placing him at the centre of media discussion.

January witnessed an emotional moment when legendary vocalist Sabina Yasmin returned to the stage after a year-long hiatus. On 31 January, she performed ten songs over the course of nearly an hour, delighting audiences with her unmistakable voice. However, the evening took a distressing turn when she fell ill on stage and had to be rushed to hospital. She remained under medical care for three days, prompting an outpouring of concern and well-wishes from fans across the country.

Rock icon James, widely known as Nagar Baul, also made headlines for deeply personal reasons. Eleven years after his divorce from his second wife, Benazir Sazzad, he quietly remarried last year, choosing to keep the news private. His wife, Namia Amin, is a Bangladeshi expatriate based in the United States. In June, the couple welcomed a baby boy. James publicly confirmed both his marriage and fatherhood for the first time in October, surprising many admirers.

Singer Dilshad Nahar Kona announced her separation from Golam Mohammad Iftekhar in June through a Facebook post. Later in December, speculation arose when she shared images of her henna-adorned hands while promoting her song Mehedi. Rumours of remarriage quickly circulated, only to subside once the song was released and clarified as part of its promotion.

In other notable developments, the family of late musician Azam Khan confirmed in June that the band Uchharon had resumed activities after a 14-year hiatus. Meanwhile, singer-songwriter Arnob released his first full-length original album in nearly a decade. Titled Bhallage Na, the album was unveiled on 30 October and was warmly received by listeners.

Controversy also cast its shadow over the year. In October, senior singer Mujib Pardeshi faced criticism after pushing a fellow musician during a live performance. Earlier, in June, Partha Majumder accused ghazal singer Mezbah Ahmed of using abusive language and issuing threats via a social media post.

Adding to the year’s somber notes, a tax notice was issued last September in the name of the late Andrew Kishore—five years after his death—stating outstanding dues amounting to BDT 72,803. Finally, August saw lyricist and composer Prince Mahmud announce his decision to step away from film music, choosing instead to focus on audio-based projects.
