LPG Price for 12kg Cylinder Rises Fifty Taka

The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the private sector has risen by 4.21 taka per kilogram, prompting a 50-taka increase for the standard 12-kilogram household cylinder this February. According to the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), the new price for a 12kg cylinder has been set at 1,356 taka, up from 1,306 taka in January 2026. Last month, the price had already increased by 53 taka.

The announcement was made today (Monday) at a press conference by BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed, who stated that the new price would take effect from 6 pm. BERC reviews and sets LPG prices monthly, although the regulated price is not always reflected in the retail market.

The 12kg cylinder, the most commonly used size for domestic purposes, has faced a persistent supply shortage for over a month, leading some retailers to charge 800–1,000 taka above the official price per cylinder. Responding to questions from journalists, Chairman Ahmed explained that while BERC sets the official prices according to the law, supply constraints often result in higher market rates. He added that efforts are underway to increase imports and stabilise supply.

Under the new pricing, the cost per kilogram of private-sector LPG, including VAT, has been fixed at 113.04 taka, compared with 108.83 taka last month, representing a monthly increase of 4.21 taka. This rate serves as a basis for pricing various cylinder sizes in the market, which range from small household cylinders to larger commercial units.

Meanwhile, the government-supplied 12.5kg cylinders remain unchanged at 825 taka, and autogas for vehicles has been priced at 62.14 taka per litre, up from 59.80 taka last month.

BERC has been regulating LPG prices in Bangladesh since April 2021. The main components of LPG—propane and butane—are imported from various countries, with the monthly price benchmarked to the Saudi cargo price (CP) published by Saudi Aramco. BERC calculates the domestic LPG price based on the CP rate and the average monthly exchange rate, derived from import invoices submitted by local importers.

The table below summarises recent price changes for commonly used LPG products:

Despite the official increases, consumers continue to face inflated prices due to limited supply in the market. Retailers are charging significantly more than the regulated rates, underscoring ongoing challenges in meeting domestic demand.
