A 23-year-old madrasa student suffered severe injuries after an explosion occurred while he was reportedly attempting to make a cocktail at his home in Nilfa Bazar, Tungipara Upazila, on Monday. The blast left burns on his hands, feet, and face, prompting urgent medical attention.
The victim, Matiur Rahman, was initially treated at Khulna Medical College Hospital before being transferred on Tuesday to the National Burn Institute in Dhaka for specialised care. Hospital sources confirmed that he remains in a serious condition and is under intensive observation.
Following the incident, the Bomb Disposal Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police visited Matiur’s residence. Officers recovered multiple items of evidence and successfully neutralised an unexploded device resembling a cocktail, preventing potential further harm. Investigators are currently examining how the explosive material was being handled and whether any safety guidelines were ignored.
Tungipara Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Ayub Ali, stated that formal legal proceedings are being prepared against those responsible. He also emphasised that the case is under active investigation and that authorities are committed to preventing similar accidents in the future.
