Madrasa Student Murdered After Witnessing Drug Use

In a shocking incident in Gazipur, Bangladesh, a madrasa student, Mahabub Islam Roni, was brutally murdered after allegedly witnessing a minor using cannabis. Following the killing, the assailant set Roni’s body on fire in an attempt to conceal the crime. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested a teenager in connection with the case and has disclosed further details after intensive investigation.

Gazipur PBI Police Superintendent, Md. Abul Kalam Azad, confirmed the incident on Friday, 6 March.

Background of the Incident

According to PBI’s investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Bishwajit Biswas, Roni lived with his family in a rented house in Bhabanipur Purba Para, Joydebpur, Gazipur. He was a student at a local madrasa.

On the night of 27 February, after attending Tarabi prayers at a nearby mosque, Roni went missing while returning home. Despite exhaustive searches by family members across multiple locations, he could not be found. The next day, locals discovered a charred body deep inside a nearby forest. The victim’s torso and head were severely burned. The police subsequently recovered the body from the site. Following this, Roni’s uncle, Md. Tara Mia, filed a murder complaint at Joydebpur Police Station.

Arrest and Confession

The PBI conducted a shadow investigation alongside local police and, based on evidence, arrested Shabbir Ahmed, an employee at a local shop, on the night of Thursday, 5 March. When presented before the court on Friday, he gave a confessional statement.

Police Superintendent Md. Abul Kalam Azad stated that on the night of the murder, Shabbir Ahmed was consuming cannabis in the forest when Roni unexpectedly arrived at the scene.

“Roni threatened to inform others about the incident. Shabbir repeatedly requested him to keep it secret, but when Roni refused, Shabbir pushed him from behind, causing him to fall, and then strangled him, resulting in his death on the spot. Afterwards, Shabbir set the body on fire to hide the crime,” the PBI official explained.

Legal Proceedings

The PBI confirmed that legal action against the arrested suspect is currently underway. Investigations continue to determine whether others were involved in the crime. The local community has expressed outrage and demanded swift justice.
