A significant change has taken place at the leadership of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICTB), as the appointment of Mohammad Tajul Islam as Chief Prosecutor has been revoked. In his place, lawyer Md. Aminul Islam has been appointed as the new Chief Prosecutor. The official notification was issued on Monday by the Solicitor Sub-Division of the Law and Justice Division under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
According to the notification, the appointment of Mohammad Tajul Islam has been officially cancelled, and Md. Aminul Islam has been entrusted with the responsibilities of Chief Prosecutor. He will receive a salary, allowances, and other benefits equivalent to those of the Attorney General. The order is effective immediately, and he will oversee all ongoing and future cases at the tribunal.
Md. Aminul Islam is a seasoned lawyer of the Supreme Court and has held prominent positions within the Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum, including serving as a central committee member and former vice-president. He is widely recognised for his extensive experience in both national and international legal matters, making him a highly qualified candidate for this pivotal role.
Mohammad Tajul Islam was originally appointed Chief Prosecutor on 5 September 2024 during the tenure of the interim government. However, following the formation of the new government after the 13th National Parliamentary elections, his appointment was revoked, paving the way for the induction of Md. Aminul Islam as the new Chief Prosecutor.
