Malaysia Expelled After Two Wins Voided

Malaysia’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup have been dashed after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) annulled two of the national team’s victories in the qualification stage. The matches in question, against Nepal and Vietnam, were forfeited due to the inclusion of players deemed ineligible to represent Malaysia at the international level.

In the third round of qualifiers, Malaysia had convincingly defeated Nepal and Vietnam by 3–0 in each match. However, following the AFC’s disciplinary ruling, both wins were cancelled. This decision has left Malaysia six points behind group leaders Vietnam in Group F. With each of the four teams in the group still having one match remaining, Malaysia has effectively lost any chance of securing a top position that would allow them to advance to the final stage of the Asian Cup. Vietnam, with 15 points from five matches, has now officially secured qualification.

The AFC also imposed a financial penalty, fining the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) $50,000, which must be settled within 30 days. The FAM issued a statement on its official website, indicating that it will review the AFC’s formal documentation before determining the next steps.

Earlier this month, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld part of FIFA’s disciplinary action against Malaysia. Seven players, found to have used falsified citizenship documents to represent Malaysia, were banned from official matches for 12 months. In addition, CAS confirmed that FAM must pay a fine of 350,000 Swiss francs (approximately $444,275) imposed by FIFA.

One of the banned players is centre-back Facundo Garses, who plays for the Spanish club Deportivo Alavés. FIFA had initially imposed a one-year ban last September, after investigations revealed that these players had participated in the Asian Cup qualifiers against Vietnam using falsified documents.

The controversy has dealt a severe blow to Malaysian football, highlighting systemic issues in player eligibility verification. FAM has committed to a thorough review of internal procedures to prevent similar breaches in the future and ensure compliance with international football regulations.

This episode serves as a cautionary tale for national associations worldwide, emphasising the importance of rigorous eligibility checks and adherence to both FIFA and AFC guidelines in international competitions.
