Man Detained with Toy Pistol near Shahbagh Protest Sent to Jail

A young man detained with a toy pistol near an ongoing protest at Shahbagh in the capital has been sent to jail, prompting renewed debate over public safety, mental health awareness, and policing in crowded civic spaces. The detainee, identified as Arafat Jaman, was produced before a court on Tuesday (30 December) after being shown arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure by Shahbagh Police.

According to police officials, Arafat Jaman was apprehended from the vicinity of the Inqilab Mancha sit-in programme, a location that has recently witnessed heightened public gatherings and demonstrations. Following his arrest, police held preliminary discussions with his family members, who reportedly informed law enforcement that he has been suffering from mental health issues.

Shahbagh Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation), Md Asaduzzaman, told the media that Arafat Jaman was formally produced before the court under Section 54 and subsequently remanded to jail custody. He added that further legal proceedings are currently underway and will be conducted in accordance with the law.

Details of the incident reveal that on Monday night at around 8:30 pm, protesters at the Inqilab Mancha noticed Arafat Jaman behaving suspiciously near the demonstration site. Upon searching him, they discovered a pistol-like object. Concerned about public safety, the protesters detained him and handed him over to Shahbagh Police Station along with the seized item.

Subsequent forensic examination by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) confirmed that the recovered object was, in fact, a toy pistol. Despite this, police officials maintain that carrying such an item in a sensitive, crowded area could have triggered panic and posed a serious risk to public order.

This is not the first time Arafat Jaman has come under police scrutiny. Ramna Model Police Station sources disclosed that on 4 October earlier this year, he was detained in the Paribagh area while carrying a weapon-like object around his waist. During questioning, he allegedly identified himself as a “Major” of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and claimed to be assigned to security duty around the Chief Adviser’s official residence, Jamuna. However, he failed to produce any valid identification and reportedly threatened on-duty police officers. Later verification found no evidence supporting his claims, leading to a case being filed against him at Ramna Police Station.

Arafat Jaman hails from Aranyapasha village in Nandail upazila of Mymensingh district and had been residing in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Police sources stated that he completed Chartered Accountancy studies from the University of Wales in the United Kingdom before returning to Bangladesh. His father, a former country manager of an industrial group, passed away in 2022, while his mother currently serves as a college professor.

Family members further revealed that following his marriage in Cumilla, his wife moved to the United States, eventually leading to their divorce. They claim that these personal setbacks significantly contributed to the deterioration of his mental health.

The incident has once again highlighted the complex intersection of mental health concerns, public safety, and law enforcement responsibilities in Bangladesh’s densely populated urban spaces.
