Mass Resignation Rocks NCP in Rangamati

A major internal shake-up has struck the National Citizens Party (NCP) in Rangamati as 87 leaders and activists, including Asim Chakma, coordinator of the Juraichhari Upazila committee, collectively resigned from all their positions on Monday. The announcement was confirmed by Asim Chakma himself, who also serves on the Rangamati district committee.

Circumstances of the Resignation

The mass departure occurred during an emergency meeting on 9 March, where all committee members unanimously agreed to step down. Formal resignation letters were promptly submitted to the Rangamati district committee for official processing.

Joint Coordinator Debashish Chakma explained that the Juraichhari Upazila committee, comprising 87 members, had received six-month approval from the district committee on 10 January 2026. However, the recent political climate led members to collectively relinquish their roles, signalling growing discontent within the party’s local structure.

Reasons Behind the Decision

The resigning members stated that they originally joined the NCP inspired by the ideals of the July mass uprising, hoping to build a new political framework and contribute to a reimagined Bangladesh. However, in the run-up to the 13th national parliamentary elections, the party’s decision to ally with a major political organisation was seen as a departure from its founding principles and ideological commitments.

The members asserted that the divergence between the party’s current direction and their personal political convictions made it impossible to continue in any organisational capacity.

Asim Chakma said, “Under the present circumstances, it is impossible for us to continue party activities while upholding the principles we stand for. Consequently, I have resigned from all organisational posts, including my role as coordinator of the Juraichhari Upazila committee and member of the Rangamati district committee.”

Official Responses

Bipin Jyoti Chakma, coordinator of the Rangamati district branch of the NCP, confirmed receipt of the resignation letters. Meanwhile, NCP’s southern regional organiser, Monjila Sultana Jhuma, stated that she had learned of the mass resignations through social media and local sources. She emphasised that formal resignations must be submitted to the approving committee, and it remains unclear whether the process has been fully observed.

Jhuma also speculated that, had the resignations been purely due to the party’s alliance with Jamaat, they would likely have occurred before the elections. Since the resignations came after the polls, she suggested other political pressures might have influenced the decision. However, Asim Chakma denied any external interference, insisting the move was internally motivated.
