Mass Resignations Rock Bangladesh Cricket Board

In an unprecedented turn of events, four directors of the Bangladesh Cricket Board resigned within hours of one another, raising questions about the internal dynamics of the organisation. The resignations came during the board’s fourth meeting of the current term, held yesterday, Saturday, which began in the early afternoon and continued until around 9:00 pm.

The first to step down was Fayazur Rahman Mitu, Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee and Senior Vice-Chairman of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis. Within the following two hours, Shahnian Tanim, Meherab Alam, and Manjurul Alam also tendered their resignations.

The sudden wave of resignations on a single day has prompted speculation, though one outgoing director noted that the decision had been made earlier due to dissatisfaction with the board’s operations.

Following the resignations, attention has shifted to the upcoming submission of a report by the investigative committee regarding the most recent BCB elections. The report is expected to be submitted today, Sunday, at the National Sports Council. Sources indicate that the number of resignations may rise further, with three directors already communicating their decisions via email around 10:00 pm yesterday.

Board director Iftekhar Rahman Mithu urged patience, emphasising that the board must allow the investigative committee to complete its work. “If there were instability, would I still be here? What I hear is that an investigative committee has been formed. They must be allowed to carry out their duties. Everyone is performing their responsibilities. We are serving with passion, and we should not be concerned about the future at this moment,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rubaba Daula, the board’s first female director, highlighted the productivity of the nine-hour-long meeting. “We addressed several agendas and looked ahead at what can be done. Many decisions were made today. Chairs have been assigned to each committee, and work is underway. We are focused on responsibilities and proper execution. Whatever happens will happen; our focus is to ensure the work is done correctly,” she said.

The resignations mark a critical juncture for the Bangladesh Cricket Board, and all eyes are now on the forthcoming investigative report, which could determine the direction of the board in the months ahead.
