Kylian Mbappé has sought to calm speculation on multiple fronts, addressing both his much-discussed relationship with Neymar and the uncertainty surrounding his future at Paris Saint-Germain, while interest from Real Madrid continues to simmer beneath the surface.
Speaking on Tuesday, the French forward stopped short of confirming that he would depart PSG when his contract expires at the end of the season. Nevertheless, optimism remains high in Spain. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez suggested that the club remains confident of securing Mbappé’s signature, potentially as early as January.
The 22-year-old previously made no secret of his desire to move to Real Madrid during the close season. PSG, however, rejected all approaches from the Spanish giants, determined to retain their prized asset. When questioned directly about a possible departure next summer, Mbappé offered a characteristically measured response in an interview with French sports daily L’Équipe.
“I’ve been in football long enough to know that yesterday’s truth is not necessarily today’s, nor tomorrow’s,” he said. “If someone had told me that Messi would be playing at PSG, I wouldn’t have believed it. In football, you never really know what’s going to happen.”
Pérez, by contrast, struck a more bullish tone. Speaking to Spanish newspaper El Debate on Monday, the Real Madrid president hinted that developments could arrive sooner rather than later.
“Hopefully everything can be sorted on the first of January,” Pérez said, fuelling further speculation about a pre-contract agreement.
Friction Within a Star-Studded Front Line
At club level, Mbappé currently forms what many regard as the most formidable attacking trio in world football alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar. Yet despite the abundance of talent, the partnership has not always functioned seamlessly on the pitch.
Moments of visible frustration have surfaced, most notably during a Ligue 1 match against Montpellier last month, when Mbappé was heard complaining: “This bum, he never passes to me,” in reference to Neymar. The comment quickly went viral, sparking debate about tensions within PSG’s dressing room.
Mbappé has since moved to clarify the situation, insisting that the incident was blown out of proportion.
“Yes, I said it. These are things that happen all the time in football,” he explained. “It’s just not something that usually sticks. As soon as I realised how big it had become, I spoke to him about it.”
He was keen to stress that there is no lingering animosity between the two stars.
“We’ve exchanged words like that before and we will again, because we both want to win. But there’s no resentment. I respect the player and the man, and I admire what he has achieved.”
Putting the Future to One Side
For now, Mbappé insists that speculation over his next move is not his primary concern.
“At the moment, my future is not my priority,” he said. “I already spent a lot of energy on it this summer, and it was exhausting.”
Instead, his focus has shifted to international duty. Mbappé is currently with the France squad as they prepare for the Nations League Final Four, where they face Belgium in the semi-final on Thursday. The tournament offers him an opportunity to move on from a painful summer at Euro 2020.
His missed penalty in the shootout defeat to Switzerland knocked the reigning world champions out at the last-16 stage, triggering heavy criticism at home. More disturbingly, Mbappé was also subjected to racist abuse in the aftermath.
“What shocked me was being called a monkey because of a penalty,” he said. “That’s why I asked for support — not because I missed to the left and Yann Sommer saved it. That mistake was mine.”
