Measles Deaths Rise as 931 New Suspected Cases Reported

Bangladesh’s measles situation remains a serious public health concern, with four more children dying from measles-like symptoms and 931 new suspected cases being identified across the country in the past 24 hours.

The latest figures were released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in a press statement on Wednesday, 19 August. According to the data, 145,711 people have been identified with suspected measles or measles-like symptoms between 15 March and 19 August. The number includes 931 newly identified cases recorded during the latest 24-hour period.

The number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases has also continued to increase. A further 87 people tested positive for measles in the past 24 hours, taking the cumulative number of confirmed cases since 15 March to 18,076. No deaths were reported among laboratory-confirmed measles patients during the latest 24-hour period.

Hospital admissions remain particularly high. Since 15 March, a total of 127,076 people presenting with measles-like symptoms have been admitted to hospitals. Of them, 122,805 patients have recovered sufficiently to be discharged. The figures indicate the substantial pressure that the outbreak has placed on healthcare facilities, particularly those treating children and other vulnerable patients.

The death toll associated with suspected measles has also risen. With four additional deaths reported in the latest 24 hours, the cumulative number of people who have died after developing measles-like symptoms has reached 823 since 15 March. Among laboratory-confirmed measles cases, 99 deaths have been recorded over the same period. No confirmed measles patient died during the latest reporting period.

The distinction between suspected and confirmed cases is significant. A person identified through symptoms does not automatically become a laboratory-confirmed measles patient. Symptoms associated with measles can overlap with those of other illnesses, which is why the health authorities maintain separate figures for suspected cases and cases confirmed through testing.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can spread rapidly, particularly in communities where vaccination coverage is inadequate. Children who have not received measles vaccination, as well as those who have missed one or more recommended doses, can face a greater risk of infection and complications. Severe illness can be associated with complications affecting the respiratory system and other parts of the body, particularly among vulnerable children.

The latest figures also underline the importance of recognising symptoms early. Fever, cough, a runny nose, red or watery eyes and a characteristic skin rash are among the symptoms commonly associated with measles. Anyone developing such symptoms should seek medical advice promptly rather than relying on self-diagnosis.

People suspected of having measles should also follow healthcare professionals’ advice about limiting contact with others, as the disease can spread easily before and around the time symptoms become obvious. Ensuring appropriate testing and clinical care can help health authorities distinguish measles from other illnesses with similar symptoms and improve surveillance.

The continuing rise in suspected cases, hospital admissions and deaths makes regular monitoring essential. Daily figures provide health authorities with an indication of where the pressure on medical facilities may be greatest and where additional disease-control measures, vaccination efforts or clinical resources may be required.

With 145,711 suspected cases, 18,076 confirmed infections, 127,076 hospital admissions and 823 deaths recorded since 15 March, the latest DGHS figures suggest that measles remains a significant public health challenge in Bangladesh. The four additional child deaths reported on Wednesday add urgency to efforts to detect cases early, provide timely treatment and strengthen protection against further transmission.
