Char Dispute Turns Deadly as Four Arrested After Woman’s Death

Police have detained four people in connection with the death of a woman during a violent clash over control of a newly emerged riverine char in Cumilla’s Titas upazila.

The four were detained by Meghna police during a raid on Naya Bhaterarchar village in Titas late on Sunday night, 26 July. Those held have been identified as Mainuddin, 40, Mohammad Hannan, 26, Kashem Bepari, 60, and Mohammad Rana, 21.

The arrests followed a confrontation that took place from Sunday afternoon until evening between residents of Char Binodpur and Alipur villages in neighbouring Meghna upazila and people from Naya Bhaterarchar village in Titas. The dispute reportedly centred on control and possession of a char, with the confrontation escalating into a violent clash involving traditional spears, locally known as teta.

During the fighting, Kuhinur Akter, 38, of Char Binodpur village, sustained a severe injury to her throat after being struck by a spear. She died at the scene, according to police.

Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Meghna police station, said the clash broke out over the control of the char between residents of the three villages. He confirmed that Kuhinur was fatally injured during the confrontation and died at the scene.

Police launched an operation later that night and detained the four suspects from Naya Bhaterarchar village. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the clash and determine the roles of those involved as the investigation progresses.

Asked whether a case had been formally filed over the incident, the Meghna police station officer-in-charge said he had not yet received the first information report. He added that he had been informed that the process of preparing the complaint was under way.

The incident has also prompted increased security measures in the area, amid concerns that tensions between the communities could lead to further violence. Mamirul Haque, officer-in-charge of Titas police station, said 15 police personnel had been deployed in the Char Bhatera area to maintain order. He said the overall law-and-order situation there was currently under control.

Additional police personnel have also been deployed in the Meghna police station area, according to authorities.

Disputes over riverine chars can become particularly sensitive because ownership, occupation and access to newly formed land are often contested by neighbouring communities. In this case, the confrontation involved residents from villages located in two adjacent upazilas, underscoring the potential for local land disputes to escalate rapidly when rival groups become involved.

Police presence has now been strengthened in the affected areas to prevent any further escalation. The authorities are also expected to investigate how the clash began, identify those responsible for the fatal attack and establish the circumstances that led to Kuhinur Akter’s death. The progress of the investigation and the filing of a formal case will determine the next steps in the legal process.
