Three more patients presenting with symptoms of measles have died in Bangladesh over a 24-hour period, according to figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The latest bulletin, covering the period up to 8:00 am on Monday, recorded no fresh fatalities from laboratory-confirmed measles, though the combined mortality figure linked to both confirmed cases and suspected symptoms since the start of the year has now reached 847.
Data provided by the health authority indicates that 96 of these overall fatalities have been confirmed as measles through laboratory testing, whilst 751 involved patients who died after displaying characteristic clinical symptoms of the disease. Of the three latest deaths linked to suspected cases, two were registered in the Sylhet Division and one in the Dhaka Division. Public health teams are continuing to track localized clusters in these regions to help contain further community transmission.
During the same reporting period, laboratories nationwide confirmed 113 new measles cases, bringing the total number of verified infections this year to 16,408. A further 967 individuals were identified presenting with typical symptoms, including high fever and distinct skin rashes, raising the cumulative count of suspected measles cases across the country to 131,050.
Measles is a highly contagious airborne viral infection that poses serious risks to young children and individuals with weakened immune systems. Complications can include severe diarrhoea, pneumonia, and brain inflammation. Health authorities continue to highlight the importance of routine immunization, advising parents to ensure their children receive the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine at designated community health centres and to seek prompt medical attention if symptoms develop.
