Medina Vows to Honour Messi’s World Cup Farewell

Argentina defender Facundo Medina has declared that he and his teammates are prepared to “give their lives” on the pitch to ensure Lionel Messi enjoys a memorable farewell at what is widely expected to be the legendary captain’s final FIFA World Cup.

The emotional pledge came after Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria, a match in which Messi scored both goals to secure another crucial win for the reigning world champions. Medina played a key role in the opening goal, providing the assist that prompted Messi to draw comparisons with the famous cut-back passes he used to receive from former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba.

Ahead of Argentina’s final Group-stage match against Jordan, Medina reflected on Messi’s praise and the squad’s determination to end the tournament on the highest possible note in an interview with FIFA’s official website.

Following the win over Austria, Messi recalled the instinctive understanding he had developed with Alba during their years together at Barcelona.

“I always used to tell Jordi to play the ball back because I’d get there,” Messi said after the match. “Medina’s pass reminded me of those old Barcelona days.”

For most players, such praise from one of football’s greatest-ever figures would be unforgettable. Medina, however, responded with humility, insisting the comparison was generous.

“I think Messi exaggerated a little,” the defender said.

“Yes, that pass reminded me of those wonderful Barcelona days as well, but nowadays everything tends to be magnified in the media. I simply tried to do my best on the pitch.”

The defender’s modesty contrasted with the intensity of his comments about Argentina’s ambitions for the remainder of the tournament.

With qualification for the knockout phase secured, Argentina are now preparing for what Medina described as a series of “six finals”, referring to the potential path to lifting the World Cup trophy. Every match from this stage onwards is effectively an elimination contest, leaving no room for error.

“We still have six finals ahead of us,” Medina said.

“We will give everything we have. No matter where the coach asks us to play, we will fight with all our strength so that our captain’s farewell becomes the most beautiful and dignified possible. We are ready to give our lives on the pitch for Messi.”

His comments reflect the deep admiration Messi commands within the Argentine squad. Since leading the country to World Cup glory in 2022, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has remained both the team’s creative force and its emotional leader. Despite entering the latter stages of his career, Messi continues to deliver decisive performances on football’s biggest stage.

Argentina have once again emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the title. Victories in their opening group matches have reinforced expectations that Lionel Scaloni’s side possess both the experience and quality required to mount another successful campaign.

The squad combines seasoned leaders with a new generation of talented players, many of whom have spoken openly about the privilege of sharing the pitch with Messi. Their objective extends beyond winning another World Cup. There is also a collective desire to provide the captain with a fitting conclusion to one of the greatest international careers in football history.

For Medina, that mission is straightforward. Individual accolades and personal recognition are secondary to the team’s ultimate goal. His focus, like that of his teammates, is on helping Argentina progress through the knockout rounds and ensuring that, if this does prove to be Messi’s final appearance at a World Cup, it ends with another unforgettable chapter in the country’s football history.
