Thousands Attend Funeral of Lakshmipur Mother and Three Daughters

The funeral prayers for a mother and her three daughters, who were brutally killed in a rented house in Lakshmipur’s Raipur upazila, drew thousands of mourners on Friday as grief swept through the local community following one of the district’s most shocking recent crimes.

The janaza of Shahinur Begum, 38, and her daughters—Sayma Akter, 21, Nafisa Akter Ikra, 17, and Fatema Akter Shifa—was held at around 5:30 pm on Friday on the Dhanhata Riverbank Road in Raipur municipality. A large number of residents, relatives and well-wishers attended the funeral prayers, reflecting the widespread sorrow and outrage triggered by the killings.

Following the funeral, the bodies were taken to their ancestral village of Lotia in Homna upazila of Cumilla, where family members arranged their burial.

The funeral was attended by representatives of law enforcement, political parties and local organisations. Among those present were Raipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Mia, Raipur Municipality BNP President ABM Jilani, General Secretary Nazrul Islam Liton, Upazila BNP Organising Secretary Shahriar Faisal, Raipur Municipality Jamaat Ameer Fazlul Karim, Nayeb-e-Ameer Kamal Uddin, Raipur Traders’ Association President Saiful Islam Murad, General Secretary Alamgir Hossain and several other political, social and professional leaders.

Family members also gathered to bid a final farewell. Shahinur Begum’s son, Junaid Islam Sifat, along with her father Dadan Mia, brother Chana Ullah and relative Jamal Hossain, arrived in Raipur on Thursday night after learning of the tragedy and were present at the funeral prayers.

Speaking to journalists, Officer-in-Charge Shahin Mia said a murder case had already been filed in connection with the incident. He added that a five-member investigation committee had been formed to examine every aspect of the case.

“We have registered a murder case and constituted a five-member committee to investigate the incident. The investigation is being conducted with the utmost importance, and we are working to uncover the full circumstances behind the killings as quickly as possible,” he said.

According to police, the attack took place on Thursday morning at a rented house in the Riverbank area of Raipur municipality. Investigators said a young man entered the residence and fatally attacked Shahinur Begum and her three daughters with a sharp weapon.

The suspected attacker, identified as 28-year-old Antor Majumdar, was later beaten by local residents after the incident. He also died from his injuries.

The killings have left residents in Raipur deeply shaken, with many expressing disbelief that four members of the same family could lose their lives in such a violent attack. The large turnout at Friday’s funeral reflected both the community’s solidarity with the bereaved family and growing calls for a thorough investigation to establish the motive behind the crime.

Police have not yet disclosed further details regarding the motive or the findings of the preliminary investigation. Officials say evidence is being collected and witnesses are being questioned as part of the inquiry.

The deaths of Shahinur Begum and her three daughters have cast a shadow over the area, with residents hoping that investigators will swiftly determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and ensure that every aspect of the case is brought to light.
