Lionel Messi has been officially recognised as Barcelona’s most loved player in history, according to a survey by Spanish daily Sport. The survey confirms what millions of fans have long believed: Messi remains synonymous with the Catalan club’s identity and spirit. The award was presented during Sport’s Valors del Deporte gala in Miami.
Messi eclipsed football legends such as Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Ronaldinho, and Johan Cruyff to claim the top spot. Accepting the award, he stated, “I will spend a few more years here at Inter Miami, but we will return to Barcelona, as it has always been my true home.”
Joan Vehils, director of Sport, personally handed Messi the award. The Argentinian star expressed his desire to remain a supporter at Camp Nou, saying, “I will be there as just another fan, following the matches and continuing to support the club in every way.”
Messi’s tenure at Barcelona from 2004 to 2021 was extraordinary. Over 837 matches, he scored 709 goals and helped secure 35 major titles, establishing the club as a global football powerhouse. His achievements on and off the pitch have left an indelible mark on Barcelona’s history.
Reflecting on his journey, Messi recalled the highs and lows: “We have shared so much together. A long relationship doesn’t always remain sweet; there are hard times too. This is my home, my place, my people. I had hoped to spend my entire career there. Sadly, things turned out differently.”
He emphasised the importance of memories, adding, “Despite leaving under unusual circumstances without fans, I will always treasure the moments we shared. My affection for everyone at Barcelona remains unwavering.”
