Messi Scores in Inter Miami’s New Stadium

Inter Miami’s new stadium witnessed a historic moment as captain Lionel Messi netted his first goal for the club in just ten minutes of the inaugural match. The goal came directly in front of the ‘Leo Messi Stand,’ named in honour of the Argentine superstar, marking a memorable beginning for both player and team.

Despite Messi’s early strike, Inter Miami could not secure a victory, with the Major League Soccer (MLS) encounter against Austin FC ending in a 2–2 draw at their home ground.

Interestingly, the first-ever goal in the stadium’s history was scored by visiting Austin defender Guilherme Vitor, who put the visitors ahead in the sixth minute. Messi equalised four minutes later with a spectacular header, registering the 903rd goal of his illustrious career.

Although Miami dominated possession following the equaliser, breaking down Austin’s resolute defence proved challenging. Austin regained the lead in the 53rd minute through a counterattack finished by Jayden Nelson.

Coach Javier Mascherano made a decisive substitution in the 73rd minute, bringing on veteran striker Luis Suárez. Eight minutes later, Suárez scored from close range, following a header by German Barterem off a Messi corner, rescuing a point for Miami.

Miami had a late opportunity to win the match, but Messi’s trademark free-kick struck the post in the 90th minute. A follow-up by Suárez was ruled out for offside. The draw extended Inter Miami’s unbeaten streak in the MLS to five matches, while Austin FC remained winless in four games.

This match was Inter Miami’s first home game since winning last season’s MLS Cup and the first played at their newly built stadium bearing the city’s name, after six years at Fort Lauderdale.

The 26,000-capacity stadium was inaugurated by club co-owners David Beckham and Jorge Mas. Beckham, visibly emotional, reflected on years of effort to establish the venue, recalling promises made upon joining MLS 20 years ago and arriving in Miami 13 years ago.

Also present to witness the historic occasion was Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário, a former Real Madrid teammate of Beckham.

Mascherano praised the stadium after the game, stating: “It is a spectacular venue, undoubtedly world-class. The atmosphere created by the fans was incredible; the stands were completely full.”

Next week, Inter Miami will host New York Red Bulls at their new stadium.
