Mexican Contestant Wins Crown After Standing Up to Host

Fatima Bash of Mexico has won the 74th edition of Miss Universe, which began in Thailand on 2 November. At the outset of the competition, she faced a disparaging remark from the host. Bangladesh’s contestant Tanzia Zaman Methila secured a place in the top 30 but failed to advance to the top 12.

The final round of Miss Universe 2025 commenced at 7 a.m. Bangladesh time on 21 November in Bangkok, Thailand. After several rounds, five contestants—representing Thailand, the Philippines, Venezuela, Mexico and Ivory Coast—reached the final stage. Each contestant was asked two questions by the judges, and based on their answers, the winner was chosen.

Fatima ultimately claimed the crown. Before the main event, a pre-pageant ceremony was held. According to the rules, contestants must create a promotional video for the host country. Beyond the official photoshoot, a few extra pictures were taken, which Miss Universe Mexico could not upload to social media on time. As a result, Nawat Itsaragrisil, the director of Miss Universe Thailand, publicly insulted her by calling her a “dumbhead”.

Fatima immediately responded, stating that she was not being given due respect as a woman. The host then attempted to reprimand her by calling security, but by that time other contestants had taken her side and collectively left the hall. The event was being broadcast live on social media.

In an interview afterwards, Fatima said that no woman in the 21st century should be controlled like a puppet. No one has the right to disrespect or manipulate women; she came to the competition to represent all women. Insulting her meant insulting womanhood as a whole.

Despite issuing three separate apologies, the host failed to satisfy the Miss Universe authorities. Nawat, who had only taken charge this year, was removed from his position.

Following the incident, Fatima’s popularity soared, and the other contestants earned praise for standing with her. In the final round, she impressed judges once again with her intelligence. Miss Thailand finished as the runner-up in Miss Universe 2025.
