Jennifer Jimenez, Director of Bands at South Miami Senior High School, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Music Educator Award, presented as part of the prestigious Grammy Awards. Selected from more than 2,000 nominations submitted across all 50 American states, Jimenez emerged victorious after a rigorous, months-long adjudication process that culminated in a shortlist of ten national finalists.
The Music Educator Award recognises exceptional teachers who have made a lasting contribution to the field of music education and demonstrated a measurable impact on the lives of their students. In accepting the honour, Jimenez expressed both humility and gratitude.
“I am deeply honoured to represent music educators across the country who work tirelessly each day,” she said. “This recognition shines a light not only on my work, but on our extraordinary school community.”
In addition to national recognition, Jimenez received a personal honorarium of 10,000 US dollars, alongside a matching 10,000-dollar institutional grant to strengthen the school’s music programme. The funding will support instruments, sheet music, travel opportunities, and enrichment initiatives for pupils within the school’s renowned band department.
Now in her nineteenth year at South Miami Senior High, Jimenez has cultivated a programme widely admired for both artistic excellence and student development. A previous finalist for the same Grammy distinction, she is also a recipient of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Sondheim Inspirational Teaching Award, underscoring her sustained commitment to educational leadership.
Under her direction, the school’s “Cobra Band” has flourished, earning invitations to perform at world-class venues including Carnegie Hall. Students have additionally appeared at two editions of the Super Bowl, a rare distinction for a secondary school ensemble. Alumni frequently credit Jimenez with instilling discipline, resilience and confidence that extend far beyond the rehearsal room.
The strength of the local educational community was further reflected in the success of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district during the early stages of the national competition. Five educators from the district reached the quarter-final round, demonstrating the breadth of musical talent within Miami-Dade.
