Middle East Airspace Closure Cancels 54 Flights

In the wake of recent military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory, airspace over parts of the Middle East has been temporarily closed for security reasons, leading to the cancellation of 54 flights from Dhaka to various Middle Eastern destinations. The disruptions have affected a substantial number of passengers, causing delays and forcing many to alter their travel plans.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday morning, 1 March, Group Captain S.M. Ragib Samad, Executive Director of Shahjalal International Airport, stated: “Due to security concerns, all flights bound for the Middle East have been suspended from Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning. Our primary priority is to ensure passengers reach their destinations safely and that airport services are maintained without compromise.”

Preliminary reports indicate that 27 flights were cancelled on Saturday alone, affecting approximately 10,000 passengers. Many travellers were accommodated temporarily by the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare, while others returned to their hometowns or residences. The remaining cancellations on Sunday brought the total to 54 flights, affecting over 20,000 passengers.

The affected flights primarily included routes to major Middle Eastern hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Mecca, and Riyadh. The airport authorities have assured that, once airspace restrictions are lifted, the respective airlines will notify passengers via mobile alerts regarding rescheduled departures. Collaborative measures between the airport and airlines are ongoing to prevent further disruption and to provide clear guidance to travellers.

Security experts emphasise that, although temporary airspace closures are routine under such circumstances, passengers should remain alert and prepared, given the heightened geopolitical tensions. In response, Shahjalal International Airport has issued detailed instructions for travellers on how to respond to emergencies and manage potential delays.

Passengers are urged to monitor the latest airport announcements and follow airline communications closely before their planned journeys. Airport authorities stress that safety remains the foremost concern in the current volatile situation, and compliance with official guidance is essential.
