Midland Bank Supports Bengal Institute with Generous Funding

The Midland Bank family has extended a substantial financial contribution of BDT 10 lakh to the Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscapes, and Settlements. The funding is intended to support the comprehensive publication documenting the life and work of the eminent architect Muzharul Islam.

Of the total grant, BDT 5 lakh has been provided through the Bank’s Islamic Banking Fund, forming part of Midland Bank’s ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The remaining BDT 5 lakh was raised through voluntary contributions from members of the bank family. According to an official press release, this support represents a coordinated effort to promote architectural research and cultural scholarship in Bangladesh.

A formal cheque handover ceremony was held on 14 December 2025 at the bank’s headquarters. At the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Md. Ahsan-uz Zaman, personally presented the cheque to Mrs Nusrat Sumaiya, Research and Design Director at the Bengal Institute. Also present were the institute’s Chief Officer, Mr Md. Rashadul Anwar (PRD), the Head of Islamic Banking, Syed Sakibuzzaman, along with other senior officials, all of whom praised the initiative for its visionary approach.

The funding will specifically support the completion of the forthcoming publication entitled “Muzharul Islam: A Future Architect”. This work forms a central part of the Architect Muzharul Islam Centenary Project, commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of the national architectural icon. The project includes a series of memorial events, lectures, visual exhibitions, and the publication itself, which is scheduled for release in early 2026.

During the ceremony, Mr Ahsan-uz Zaman highlighted the importance of cultural and educational initiatives, stating: “Recognising national talent not only honours their contributions but also inspires future architects, designers, and urban planners.” Mrs Nusrat Sumaiya expressed sincere gratitude, emphasising that this support will significantly advance the institute’s efforts to document and promote Muzharul Islam’s enduring legacy.

The collaboration between Midland Bank and the Bengal Institute underscores the crucial role financial institutions can play in nurturing educational, cultural, and creative endeavours. It also reflects a committed effort to preserve and celebrate Bangladesh’s rich architectural heritage for generations to come.
