Midnight Storm Risk in Three Regions

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a late-night weather alert warning of gusty winds, rain, and thunderstorms across several parts of the country. The advisory, released for inland river ports, indicates that temporary storms may affect certain regions until 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday (11 March).

Meteorologists say the unstable weather conditions could bring short-lived but potentially disruptive storms, particularly in areas where strong winds may affect transport and outdoor activities.

Regions Under Storm Alert

According to the BMD bulletin, Rajshahi, Jashore, and Sylhet are the most likely to experience adverse weather conditions overnight. The department forecasts winds blowing from the west or north-west at speeds ranging between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour.

These gusty winds may occur alongside rain or thunderstorms, creating brief but intense weather events. Authorities have therefore urged operators of inland river vessels and small boats to remain cautious, as sudden winds and lightning can pose risks to navigation.

Weather Systems Influencing Conditions

In its 120-hour weather outlook issued from 6:00 p.m., the meteorological department explained that a trough of low pressure currently extends over West Bengal and neighbouring areas, influencing atmospheric instability across the region.

At the same time, the seasonal low-pressure system remains active over the southern Bay of Bengal, a common feature during the transition toward the pre-monsoon season. The interaction of these systems is expected to produce scattered rainfall or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds in isolated locations across multiple divisions.

Areas that could experience such conditions include:

  • Rangpur

  • Rajshahi

  • Dhaka

  • Mymensingh

  • Khulna

  • Barishal

  • Chattogram

  • Sylhet

Although the rainfall is unlikely to be widespread, isolated thunderstorms and lightning may occur in some districts.

Temperature Outlook

Meteorologists also predict a slight decrease in daytime temperatures due to cloud cover and rainfall associated with the weather system. However, night-time temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.

Daytime temperatureDrop by 1–2°C

Safety Advice

Weather officials have urged people to remain vigilant, particularly those engaged in river transport, fishing, agriculture, and outdoor work. Sudden wind gusts and lightning strikes can pose hazards to small vessels, temporary structures, and open areas.

Although the anticipated storms are expected to be short and localised, residents are advised to monitor official weather updates and take precautionary measures where necessary.

Such weather conditions are typical during Bangladesh’s early pre-monsoon period, when shifting atmospheric patterns over the Bay of Bengal frequently trigger brief but intense thunderstorms across different parts of the country.
