Migrant Dies After Saudi Missile Strike

A Bangladeshi migrant worker, Abdullah Al Mamun (35), has died after sustaining critical injuries in a missile strike in Saudi Arabia, leaving his family in northern Bangladesh awaiting the return of his body. Mamun hailed from Bharbhara village in Rasulpur Union of Gafargaon Upazila, located in the Mymensingh region.

According to family members, Mamun had planned to return home roughly a month after Eid-ul-Fitr, carrying with him savings accumulated over years of labour abroad. His ambition was to construct a new house and improve the living conditions of his family. That aspiration has now been tragically cut short.

Mamun was the second of six siblings—three brothers and three sisters—and the son of Shahid Saudagar. He had migrated to Saudi Arabia approximately 15 years ago in search of better economic opportunities. His last visit to Bangladesh was five years ago. He is survived by his wife, Sharmin Akter (30), and their six-year-old son, Mahedi Sheikh.

Family sources report that the incident occurred on 8 March, shortly before iftar, in the city of Al Kharj. A missile struck a labour camp operated by Al Towaik Baldia Company, where Mamun was residing. He was critically injured in the blast and rushed to a local hospital, where he remained on life support for several days. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

News of his death reached his family the following day, plunging them into deep grief. His mother, Shahida Khatun, has been inconsolable, lamenting the loss of her son who had long promised to transform their fortunes. His father, overcome with sorrow, expressed grave concern about the family’s future, particularly the upbringing of his young grandson.

Local authorities in Gafargaon have stepped in to provide immediate assistance. The Upazila executive officer confirmed that essential supplies for the upcoming Eid have been delivered to the bereaved family. Efforts are also underway, in coordination with the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board, to expedite the repatriation of Mamun’s body.

Meanwhile, the District Administrator of Mymensingh has directed officials to ensure comprehensive support for the family. Plans are being considered for longer-term rehabilitation, including financial assistance and measures to help the widow achieve economic self-sufficiency once the body is returned and funeral rites are completed.
