The mortal remains of Bangladeshi expatriate worker Abdullah Al Mamun, who was killed in a missile strike amid escalating conflict in the Middle East, were repatriated to Bangladesh on Monday, marking yet another sombre reminder of the risks faced by migrant communities in conflict-affected regions.
The coffin arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at approximately 9:45 a.m. aboard a Saudi Airlines flight. The body was formally received by the Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, along with senior government officials and representatives from relevant ministries and welfare bodies.
Officials confirmed that Abdullah Al Mamun had been killed in Saudi Arabia after being caught in a missile strike linked to ongoing regional hostilities. His body was reportedly severely burnt in the incident, underscoring the intensity of the attack and the dangers faced by civilians and foreign workers in affected areas.
Speaking at the airport, Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury stated that so far seven Bangladeshi nationals had been reported dead due to the broader Middle East conflict. Of them, four bodies have already been repatriated, while one was buried in Saudi Arabia following the consent of the deceased’s family. Efforts are ongoing to locate and repatriate the remaining cases.
In recognition of the tragedy, the government, through the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board, provided immediate financial assistance to the bereaved family. The support package included cash aid and additional compensation, with further financial assistance promised in the coming months.
