The Minister for Liberation War Affairs, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram), has recently issued a directive to all officials, emphasising the need to accord the highest respect and dignity to the country’s freedom fighters when providing services. Highlighting past shortcomings, the Minister noted that since the nation’s independence, the contributions of freedom fighters have not always received the recognition they deserve, and that administrative personnel must act with greater responsibility and awareness in this regard.
Speaking at a consultation meeting held on Wednesday in the Ministry’s conference room, the Minister stated, “Whenever a freedom fighter visits the Ministry, they must be received with genuine warmth, courtesy, and utmost respect.” He also stressed the importance of preserving the spirit of the Liberation War, safeguarding historical narratives, and ensuring that the sacrifices of freedom fighters are duly honoured in all official dealings.
Reflecting on historical events, Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) recalled that Major, and later President, Shahid Ziaur Rahman had declared the nation’s independence from the Kalurghat radio centre in Chittagong. He further elaborated on key aspects of the Liberation War, noting that members of the East Bengal Regiment (EBR) and the East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) played pivotal roles in forming the Mukti Bahini, the guerrilla resistance force. These brave individuals risked their lives to secure the country’s freedom, demonstrating unparalleled courage and commitment.
The Minister underlined that the Liberation War was a unique example of collective resistance by the people. “The youth spontaneously joined the struggle,” he said, recounting his personal experiences from the battlefields of 1971. Despite suffering oppression and discrimination, the Bengali population exhibited extraordinary bravery, with countless students, young men, and ordinary citizens actively participating in the fight for independence. He noted that the Pakistani military waged a campaign against an entire nation, yet the united resistance of the people ultimately led to their defeat.
During the meeting, the Minister instructed officials to ensure that all services provided to freedom fighters are timely, professional, and citizen-focused. Senior officials of the Ministry were present at the consultation.
The table below summarises the key participants and contributions during the Liberation War:
| Division | Key Contribution | Notable Figures |
|---|---|---|
| Formation of Mukti Bahini | Organised resistance led by EBR and EPR members | Officers and Bir Yoddhas of the period |
| Declaration of Independence | Broadcast from Kalurghat radio centre in Chittagong | Shahid President Ziaur Rahman |
| Public Participation | Involvement of students, youth, and ordinary citizens in the war | People from all strata of Bengali society |
Through this directive, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs aims to instil the spirit of patriotism and courage in the new generation while ensuring that the nation’s freedom fighters receive the respect and recognition they so richly deserve.
