Minor Theft Sparks Brutal Murder in Comilla

In a shocking and gruesome incident in Daudkandi Upazila, Comilla, a 24-year-old construction worker was brutally beaten to death with rods and hammers over an alleged chicken theft. The killing has sent shockwaves of fear and outrage throughout the local community.

The victim, Saeed, was a resident of Maligaon village and worked in the construction sector. According to his parents, Md. Alauddin and Samsun Nahar, the tragedy unfolded after a chicken belonging to a CNG autorickshaw driver, Abdur Razzak, went missing on the evening of [insert date]. Although there was no concrete evidence or eyewitness account of the theft, suspicion was immediately directed towards Saeed.

Instead of investigating the matter or attempting a local resolution, Saeed was summoned to his home, where he was confronted by Abdur Razzak, his two sons—Md. Rabbi and Md. Zahid—and several others, including Omar Sani, Jasim Uddin, and Md. Shaon. Witnesses reported that the group assaulted Saeed with heavy metal objects, including rods and hammers. Despite being rushed to the Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex, Saeed succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by the attending doctors.

Local residents have expressed deep concern over the extreme nature of the attack. Jasim Uddin Bhuiya of Maligaon, along with neighbours Abdus Sobhan and Abdul Adud Mia from Anuwakhola village, condemned the act, stating: “No one can justify killing a person over the loss of a chicken. This is a gross violation of human decency and the law.” They called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.

Law enforcement has acted swiftly in response. Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Md. Samsul Alam of Daudkandi Model Police Station confirmed that two suspects, shopkeeper Omar Sani (25) and Jasim Uddin (45) of Maligaon village, have been taken into custody, while efforts continue to apprehend the remaining individuals involved. He added that a murder case is being filed and that the victim’s body will be sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Officials and community leaders have emphasised that taking the law into one’s own hands over minor suspicions sends a dangerous message to society. They urged greater public awareness, strict enforcement of the law, and speedy justice to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
