Jakarta, 18 January: The wreckage of a small aircraft that went missing over the mountainous region of Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island has been located. The aircraft vanished from radar on Saturday, 17 January, while en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi. A total of 11 people were on board. According to early reports from rescue teams, both the main fuselage and the tail section have been scattered across the northern slope of a mountain.
Muhammad Arif Anwar, head of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, confirmed that a window frame from the aircraft was first spotted on Sunday morning from an air force helicopter near Mount Bulusaraung. Subsequently, the rescue team reached the main wreckage. Anwar said:
“Locating the main portion of the aircraft has significantly narrowed the search area. This is crucial for recovering the victims. Our immediate priority is now to identify any passengers who may have survived.”
The aircraft involved was a turboprop ATR 42-500, operated by Indonesia Air Transport. Onboard were eight crew members and three passengers, all travelling on a maritime patrol mission for the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.
Footage and images released by the National Search and Rescue Agency show rescue personnel negotiating dense fog and steep, rugged terrain to reach the wreckage. Challenging weather conditions and difficult topography have complicated the search and recovery operations.
Indonesia, an archipelago comprising nearly 17,000 islands, relies heavily on air and ferry transport to maintain connectivity. In recent years, the nation has faced multiple transport-related tragedies, including aircraft accidents, bus crashes, and ferry sinkings, highlighting ongoing safety challenges in the transport sector.
