In a bid to enhance pedestrian safety and ease business operations, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita has submitted a formal Development Outline (DO) letter to the relevant ministry proposing the construction of a modern overpass or underpass at the busy Manikganj bus stand. The letter, signed on Thursday, 2 April, emphasises the urgency of the project for both local residents and the region’s transport infrastructure.
The minister highlighted that her constituency, Manikganj-3, which includes Manikganj Sadar and Saturia, lies along a vital transportation corridor. The Dhaka-Uthuli-Paturia national highway, managed by the Roads and Highways Department, serves as one of the primary links between northern Bangladesh and the southwest, connecting the capital with districts such as Jashore, Khulna, Kushtia, Faridpur, and Barishal. Daily traffic along this route is substantial, comprising both heavy vehicles and light transport, which has steadily increased the highway’s strategic importance.
The DO letter specifically notes that the bus stand, located at the 52nd kilometre of the highway, is an extremely congested area. Thousands of local and inter-district passengers, alongside regular pedestrians, navigate this zone daily. On both sides of the highway, numerous commercial establishments operate, contributing significantly to the local economy.
However, the existing central divider presents a major obstacle to smooth pedestrian movement. Using the foot overbridge is often challenging for the elderly, the infirm, and ordinary pedestrians. Consequently, many are forced to cross the road directly, substantially increasing the risk of accidents. The DO letter also cites the economic impact: restricted access across the divider has led to reduced foot traffic for businesses, diminishing sales.
Minister Rita emphasised that removing the existing large divider and constructing a modern overpass or underpass is not merely a local demand but a critical measure for national road safety and traffic efficiency. She described the project as a “life-saving necessity” for the area’s residents.
Local residents and business owners have welcomed the proposal, expressing hope that the initiative will alleviate daily hardships while revitalising commerce in the vicinity.
The following table summarises key information regarding the Manikganj bus stand project:
