Mosque Loudspeaker Sparks Police Ambush

A dramatic incident in Keshabpur upazila of Jessore district has triggered widespread concern after police officers were attacked and a fugitive convict was briefly snatched from custody following an announcement made over a mosque loudspeaker.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night in Hijaldanga village when a police team conducted an operation to arrest a convicted fugitive, Jahangir Hossain, son of Alimuddin. He had been on the run after being sentenced in two separate cases—one related to narcotics and another stemming from a family dispute. According to police records, he had been sentenced to a total of two years and three months’ imprisonment.

During the arrest attempt, the situation quickly escalated. Allegations suggest that Jahangir’s brothers, Alamin and Liton, used the mosque’s loudspeaker to call on villagers to resist the police. False claims were broadcast, alleging that law enforcement had killed Jahangir, which rapidly inflamed local emotions.

Within a short time, around 50 to 60 villagers reportedly gathered at the scene and launched an attack on the police team. Three officers were injured in the assault, including Sub-Inspector Asmat Ali, Constable Shahidul Islam, and Constable Habibullah. Amid the chaos, the detained suspect was forcibly taken away by the crowd.

Following the incident, police launched a special operation to restore order and locate the fugitive. Acting on intelligence, law enforcement teams re-arrested Jahangir Hossain on Thursday morning at a village in Dumuria upazila. He has since been placed under formal legal procedures.
