Motorcyclist Killed in Rangpur Bus Collision

A tragic road accident on the Dhaka–Rangpur Highway in Mithapukur Upazila, Rangpur, claimed the life of a 58-year-old motorcyclist, while another passenger sustained serious injuries. The incident occurred on Thursday, 2 April, around midday, near the area of Gorer Matha.

The deceased has been identified as Anisur Rahman, a resident of Rambhadra village in Bamandanga Upazila, Gaibandha District. The injured, Fatema Begum, aged 60, was travelling with him; her relationship to the deceased has not been confirmed at this stage.

According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, Anisur Rahman was riding a motorcycle with a female passenger from Rangpur when a Dhaka-bound bus operated by Nabil Paribahan struck the motorcycle from behind. The force of the collision caused both occupants to be thrown onto the road, with Anisur Rahman being crushed under the bus’s wheels, resulting in his immediate death.

Locals reported that the bus was travelling at excessive speed at the time of the accident. Fatema Begum was rescued by nearby residents and initially taken to Mithapukur Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where her condition is reported to be critical.

Following the collision, the bus fled the scene. Police from Mithapukur Thana arrived promptly to control the situation and restore traffic flow on the busy highway. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to identify the bus and bring those responsible to justice. Meanwhile, the deceased’s body has been recovered and is awaiting handover to his family after legal procedures are completed.

Local residents have expressed deep concern over the frequent reckless driving on the Dhaka–Rangpur Highway, highlighting that such negligence often leads to fatal accidents. They have called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and tighter speed control measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Mithapukur Thana Officer-in-Charge, Mohammad Nuruzzaman, confirmed the ongoing investigation: “Our officers arrived immediately after the accident and brought the situation under control. Efforts are underway to locate the bus responsible, and legal action is being processed.”
