Mufti Mamunur Rashid Kasemi, the founder of ‘Ideal Marriage Bureau’, has been ordered to be remanded in custody by a Dhaka court, marking a significant development in a high-profile abuse case. The ruling was issued on Sunday afternoon by Senior Judicial Magistrate Victoria Chakma.
The legal proceedings began last Friday when Kasemi’s third wife, Tamanna Hatun, filed a case through her maternal aunt at Keraniganj Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Police swiftly responded, arresting Kasemi from his home in Atibazar, Keraniganj, at approximately 3:00 pm on Sunday.
Inspector Kamal Uddin of Dhaka District Police confirmed the arrest and stated, “Following the complaint filed on behalf of his wife, police apprehended Kasemi. Later, after a hearing, the court ordered his detention in jail. His bail hearing has been scheduled for tomorrow.”
The allegations in the case are serious. It is claimed that Kasemi initially married Tamanna Hatun, lived with her for a time, and subsequently divorced her. He is then accused of holding her in his custody from 6 September to 14 October under the pretext of remarrying, during which she allegedly faced sexual assault.
The court’s decision to detain Kasemi highlights the judiciary’s firm stance on protecting women against abuse. Legal experts note that swift police action and judicial oversight are essential in ensuring justice in cases of domestic and sexual violence. The upcoming bail hearing and further investigation will be closely monitored, as the case underscores the need for strict adherence to law and the protection of vulnerable individuals in society.
