Disappearance and Recovery
On Thursday, 16 April, Atika Akter, daughter of Saudi expatriate Dudul Mia of Banparil village, went missing shortly after 4:00 pm. Her family initiated an extensive search, utilising public announcements via loudspeakers and social media appeals to locate her. During the search, a local child reported seeing Atika in the company of a teenage boy from the same village.
Based on this information, locals detained and questioned the teenager. Acting on the information provided during this initial questioning, Atika’s body was discovered at approximately 10:00 pm in a maize field adjacent to her home. Her body was found with a cloth wrapped tightly around her neck, suggesting strangulation. In the immediate aftermath of the discovery, the teenage suspect managed to flee the scene.
Mob Violence and Fatalities
The discovery of the child’s body sparked intense anger among relatives and local residents. An agitated mob subsequently detained Najmul Hossain, the elder brother of the primary suspect. They later summoned the suspect’s father, Pannu Mia (45), and his uncle, Fazlu Mia (30). At approximately 11:00 pm, the crowd subjected the three men to a violent physical assault (lynching).
Pannu Mia and Fazlu Mia died at the scene from their injuries, and their bodies were subsequently thrown into a nearby pond. Upon receiving reports of the violence, police arrived at the location and rescued Najmul Hossain, who had sustained critical injuries. He was initially transported to Manikganj District Sadar Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
