A troubling incident has once again raised serious questions about the safety of performing artists at public events. Popular West Bengal singer Lagnajita Chakraborty was allegedly harassed and verbally abused while performing live on stage at a cultural programme in East Midnapore district. Following the incident, the singer lodged a formal complaint at Bhagwanpur Police Station, prompting an official investigation.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on Saturday evening at a cultural event held at South Point Public School, Bhagwanpur. Lagnajita Chakraborty, known for her distinctive voice and socially conscious repertoire, had been invited as the main performer. By her own account, the programme began on a calm and orderly note. The event commenced at around 7:00 pm, and for the first forty-five minutes everything proceeded smoothly. She performed several songs, after which the organisers felicitated her on stage in recognition of her contribution to contemporary Bengali music.
However, the atmosphere changed dramatically later in the evening. After completing the seventh song in her setlist, Lagnajita paused briefly to interact with the audience before moving on to the next number. Shortly before the disruption, she had performed the well-known song “Jago Maa” from the film Devi Chowdhurani, a piece often regarded as both emotive and culturally resonant.
Moments after the song concluded, a man later identified as Mehbub Mallik allegedly emerged from the audience and climbed onto the stage. Witnesses reported that he attempted to physically approach the singer in an aggressive manner while shouting abusive remarks. In a written statement, Lagnajita stated that the man used obscene language and loudly demanded that she stop singing what he described as religious-themed songs, insisting instead on “secular” music.
Quick action by organisers and members of the audience prevented the situation from escalating further. The man was restrained and escorted off the stage. Although no physical injury was reported, the singer was left visibly shaken. Distressed by the episode, she immediately left the venue and later that night filed a General Diary (GD) at the local police station.
Speaking to the media, Mithun Kumar De, the Officer-in-Charge (acting Superintendent) of Bhagwanpur Police Station, confirmed that an investigation had been initiated. According to the latest updates, the police have since arrested the main accused in connection with the incident.
The episode has sparked widespread concern within cultural circles, with fellow artists and commentators condemning the incident as an attack on artistic freedom and personal safety. Many have called for stronger security measures at public performances to ensure that artists can perform without fear or intimidation.
