Mustafa Monwar’s Lifelong Devotion to Puppet Theatre

Mustafa Monwar has long been regarded as one of the defining figures in Bangladesh’s cultural landscape, particularly in the evolution of puppet theatre. Widely known as the “Puppet Man”, his work spans painting, education and cultural leadership, yet it is his pioneering contribution to puppetry that has left the most distinctive and enduring mark.

From the 1960s onwards, Monwar began experimenting with puppetry at a time when it was largely confined to rural folk traditions in East Pakistan. Rather than treating it as a static heritage form, he reimagined it for the modern stage. By blending traditional storytelling with contemporary theatre techniques, music, lighting design and narrative structure, he transformed puppet theatre into a dynamic medium capable of engaging children and adults alike.

His approach placed puppetry at the intersection of education and entertainment. Stories were no longer only for amusement; they became tools for shaping imagination, values and social awareness among young audiences. Themes such as morality, discipline, cleanliness, education and environmental responsibility were presented in a way that was accessible, colourful and emotionally engaging.

During the Liberation War in 1971, Monwar also used puppetry as a form of cultural resistance. In refugee camps in India, he staged puppet performances that reflected the realities of war, the longing for independence and the resilience of displaced communities. These performances carried emotional weight at a time of crisis, offering both comfort and a sense of shared identity.

Several of his productions, including Agacha, Rakkhosh and Ekjon Sahoshi Krishok, gained strong audience appreciation for their inventive storytelling and social messaging. Later, his work for Bangladesh Television helped bring puppetry into millions of homes. The children’s programme Moner Kotha became particularly influential, introducing folklore, moral lessons and cultural narratives through puppets in a format that resonated deeply with younger viewers.

After independence, Monwar worked closely with institutions such as the Bangladesh Shishu Academy and the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. He conducted workshops, trained new performers and helped build a structured foundation for puppetry practice in the country. Through these efforts, a generation of puppet artists emerged who continue to carry forward his vision.

His influence also extended beyond national borders. He led performances abroad, including tours with folk puppet groups that received appreciation in cities such as Moscow and Tashkent. His television-based educational puppet programmes were recognised in international forums, including awards and acknowledgements in Japan and other countries. In 1982, he was invited as a specialist to an international conference on animation and puppetry for television in Colombo, where he contributed as a keynote speaker.

Born on 1 September 1935 in Nakol village of Magura district, Monwar comes from a culturally significant background. His ancestral home is in Monoharpur village of Shailkupa in Jhenaidah. He is the son of the renowned poet Golam Mostofa. His career began in academia as a lecturer at the East Pakistan College of Arts and Crafts, later moving to Bangladesh Television in 1964, where he eventually served as Director General. He also played a key role in establishing major cultural initiatives, including the children’s talent platform “Notun Kuri”.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to art and culture, Mustafa Monwar was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2004. His legacy remains deeply embedded in Bangladesh’s cultural memory, particularly in the way puppetry evolved from a folk tradition into a respected modern art form.
