Nishad Humayun, son of renowned writer Humayun Ahmed, aspires to become a psychiatrist while also following in his father’s footsteps as a filmmaker. He dreams of creating dramas and films like Satyajit Ray or Humayun Ahmed, focusing on human stories and meaningful narratives.
On 13 November, Humayun Ahmed’s 77th birth anniversary, Nishad shared his memories of his father at an event held at Nuhashpalli, Gazipur. He revealed that his favourite character from his father’s works is Misir Ali, as the character is psychology-based, aligning with Nishad’s ambition to study psychiatry.
Nishad further commented that he is not drawn to the current TV and film industry, which largely produces romance-centric content. Instead, he wishes to craft stories reflecting simple lives, real human experiences, and to provide opportunities for new talent with fresh perspectives.
He emphasised the importance of adapting his father’s literary works into films, saying it would introduce the stories to the younger generation who may no longer read the books. Many people compare him to his father, which makes him feel that his father is still with him.
Nishad also shared a childhood memory when a reader at a book fair mistakenly approached him thinking he was the “Nishad” from his father’s book.
Humayun Ahmed was born on 13 November 1948 in Kutubpur, Netrokona, and became one of Bangladesh’s most influential writers and filmmakers. Notable works include Shonkhonil Karagar, Aguner Poroshmoni, Shrabon Megher Din, Chandrokotha, Shyamal Chhaya, and Noy Number Bipod Sanket.
After his second marriage in 2005, he had two children, Nishad Ahmed and Ninit Ahmed. Humayun Ahmed passed away on 19 July 2012 in New York after battling cancer.
