In a distressing incident that has left the local community in shock, the lifeless body of a nine-year-old student was discovered hanging at a madrasa in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area. Authorities have yet to determine whether the child’s death was the result of foul play or suicide, and a formal investigation is currently underway.
Police retrieved the body on Friday (20 December) around 11:00 pm and handed it over to the child’s grieving family. According to local sources, the incident likely occurred earlier in the day, though the precise timing remains uncertain. News of the child’s death gradually spread among the madrasa’s students, staff, and surrounding residents, eventually escalating public concern. Following media coverage, a crowd gathered near the madrasa, causing heightened tension in the area.
Law enforcement and members of the Detective Branch (DB) swiftly arrived at the scene to restore order. Additional police personnel were deployed alongside the local police station, and by 11:30 pm, authorities had regained control of the situation.
Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Mohammad Raju, told Kaler Kantho, “Upon receiving the report, I immediately visited the scene. Officials from the DB and other law enforcement agencies were also present. Teachers, students, and local residents have been questioned as part of our preliminary investigation. We are committed to uncovering the true circumstances surrounding this tragic death.”
Residents described the news as “heart-wrenching,” with the entire community plunged into mourning. Questions have arisen regarding the madrasa’s security arrangements and supervision, particularly concerning the welfare of such young students. Many locals have expressed concern about the adequacy of monitoring in educational institutions for children of this age.
Police have emphasised that the full findings of the investigation will determine the definitive cause of death. In accordance with legal procedures, authorities will also assess the responsibilities of the madrasa’s management, consulting with the child’s family as necessary.
In response, local administration and educational authorities have urged all institutions to enhance safety measures for children, reinforcing the need for vigilant supervision. Ensuring a secure environment for students has now become a pressing responsibility for both the government and society at large.
The community continues to await clarity, hoping for justice and preventive action to avoid such tragic events in the future.
