The forced closure of a Nabin Fashion Punjabi showroom in Dhaka’s Mogbazar has prompted swift judicial action, with the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hatirjheel Police Station being summoned to explain the police’s role in the incident.
On Wednesday, 25 March, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court, presided over by Judge Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, issued the order under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code, acting suo motu in the capacity of Justice of the Peace. The directive comes in response to media reports highlighting the events at the Bishal Centre market in Mogbazar, where a group of individuals, reportedly accompanied by law enforcement personnel, entered the Nabin Fashion outlet and ordered its immediate closure. Eyewitness accounts noted some individuals exhibiting unusual and intimidating behaviour during the operation.
The court expressed concern over the apparent inaction of police officers who were present at the scene. “The police’s apparent indifference could instil fear among the public and undermine confidence in law enforcement,” the order stated. The magistrate emphasised that such conduct raises questions about adherence to professional standards and legal obligations.
Accordingly, the OC of Hatirjheel Police Station, Golam Mortuza, has been instructed to appear before the CMM Court within three days and submit a written explanation addressing why this lack of professional conduct should not be declared illegal.
Additionally, the court mandated that the Nabin Fashion showroom must be reopened within 24 hours under police supervision, and a detailed list of all individuals involved in the closure must be submitted to the court. This move underscores judicial insistence on accountability and the protection of business operations from unlawful interference.
