Namibia Recruits Cricket Legend Gary Kirsten

Cricket Namibia has announced the appointment of former South African batting great Gary Kirsten as a consultant, in the lead-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Kirsten, whose international career included 101 Tests and 185 ODIs, is widely celebrated for his outstanding performances with the bat and for his world-class coaching credentials.

Kirsten’s coaching journey has seen him achieve global acclaim. He guided India to a memorable World Cup victory in 2011, and has served as coach for South Africa and Pakistan. Additionally, he has significant experience in the Indian Premier League, including being part of the Gujarat Titans’ coaching team during their triumphant debut season in 2022.

“It is indeed a privilege to work with Cricket Namibia,” Kirsten said. “I am impressed by their dedication to creating a high-performance cricket environment. Their state-of-the-art stadium reflects their commitment to competing with the best cricketing nations. I look forward to supporting the team’s preparations for the T20 World Cup next February.”

During his consultancy, Kirsten will collaborate directly with head coach Craig Williams to provide strategic insights and technical advice, enhancing the team’s readiness for the world stage. Namibia’s cricket authorities have indicated that Kirsten’s involvement is part of a wider strategy to professionalise the team and improve competitive standards.

Namibia has steadily gained recognition in international cricket, and the addition of a figure of Kirsten’s calibre demonstrates ambition and intent. Observers anticipate that his presence will not only strengthen the senior men’s team but also elevate the country’s cricketing profile, potentially attracting more resources, sponsorships, and emerging talent.

With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, Namibia’s preparations, now bolstered by Kirsten’s consultancy, will be closely watched by fans and cricket pundits alike. The hope is that this collaboration will produce tangible results and further establish Namibia as a rising force in international cricket.
