Navy and Ansar Joint Champions in President’s Cup Fencing

The ninth edition of the President’s Cup Fencing Championship concluded on Monday at the Shaheed Captain M. Monsur Ali Handball Stadium in Paltan, Dhaka, with Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Ansar emerging as joint champions. Both teams dominated the competition, each securing six gold, five silver, and six bronze medals.

The Bangladesh Army finished as runners-up, claiming one gold, one silver, and eight bronze medals.

Individual Gold Medal Winners

In the men’s individual events, Mominur Rahman of the Bangladesh Army won gold in the foil category, while Hasan Ali of the Navy secured gold in the épée event. Ansar’s Mohammad Kamruzzaman triumphed in the sabre category.

For the women, Tanziila Akter Swapna of the Navy took the foil gold, Mahbuba Khatun of Ansar won the sabre, and Rabeya Akter of Ansar claimed gold in the épée individual event.

Team Event Champions

The men’s team épée gold went to the Navy, featuring Hasan Ali, Gopal Chandra Das, Faruk Hossain, and Rafi Babu. In the men’s sabre team event, Navy and Ansar shared the gold. Ansar’s team included Iftikharul Alam Biplob, Hasan, Mohammad Kamruzzaman, and Rasel Mia, while the Navy’s squad featured Md. Al Amin, Md. Saddam Mujib, Golam Nabi, and Har Govind Roy.

The men’s foil team gold was claimed by Ansar, represented by Md. Riaz Ahmed, Md. Monir Hossain, Hasan Mia, and Md. Nefaur Rahman. In the women’s events, the Navy won the foil team gold with Sheikh Mahmuda Imu, Naznin Sultana Suborna, Sanjida, and Tanziila Akter Swapna, while Navy also took the sabre team gold with Fatema Mujib, Chandni Akter, Farzana Yasmin Nipa, and Priyanka Sikdar.

At the closing ceremony, awards were presented by Selim Fakir, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Also present were Executive Director of the National Sports Council, Daulatuzzaman Khan; Sheikh Rahi Mohammad Asif, Director of Akij Bashir Group; Major (Retd.) Kamrul Islam, President of Bangladesh Fencing Federation; and General Secretary Basunia M. Ashikul Islam.

The championship highlighted the growing standards of fencing in Bangladesh, showcasing remarkable skill, discipline, and sportsmanship across the services and defence organisations.
