Mizanur Rahman (Sagar), Joint Member Secretary of the Bogura District unit of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has been sent to jail in connection with a case filed over allegations of extortion and embezzlement. He was produced before the court on Saturday noon, and after a hearing, the judge ordered his detention in jail. The party has also temporarily relieved him of his duties on charges of breaching organizational discipline and failing to inform the party about the allegations.
According to police sources, he was arrested on Friday around 10:30 pm during a raid conducted by Sadar Police Station officers in the Jaleshwaritala Kali Temple area of Bogura town. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Hossain Muhammad Raihan stated that Mizanur Rahman was a fugitive accused named in an arrest warrant. He had been under police surveillance for some time, and based on confidential information, law enforcement conducted an operation and detained him before producing him in court the following day.
According to the case statement, in August 2025, Mizanur Rahman along with four to five associates allegedly demanded BDT 200,000 in extortion from a businessman named Rubel Pramanik. When the businessman refused to pay the demanded amount, he was reportedly assaulted with iron rods and sharp weapons. It is further alleged that BDT 28,300 was taken from his bKash account and BDT 22,800 in cash was forcibly taken. The victim later filed a case in this regard.
A summary of the allegations is presented below:
| Type of Allegation | Details |

| Nature of assault | Use of rods and sharp weapons |
| Amount taken via bKash | BDT 28,300 |

Meanwhile, NCP Bogura District Organizing Secretary Shawkat Imran confirmed Mizanur Rahman’s party affiliation but claimed that the case stemmed from a business transaction dispute rather than extortion. However, police stated that the investigation is ongoing to determine the factual truth of the allegations, and efforts are underway to arrest the other accused individuals named in the case.
In a press release sent to the media at around 8:00 pm on Saturday, the NCP Bogura District unit announced that Mizanur Rahman had been temporarily relieved of his position due to the allegations of extortion and embezzlement, as well as for concealing information from the organization. He has been served a notice asking him to submit a written explanation to the Convener and Member Secretary regarding why he should not be permanently removed from the party.
Observers emphasize that regardless of political affiliation, accountability under the law must be ensured if allegations are proven. Maintaining neutrality and transparency in law enforcement strengthens public trust and reinforces the foundation of good governance.
