BNP Candidate Shot During Election Campaign in Chattogram

During an election campaign in Chattogram, BNP candidate for Chattogram-8, Ershad Ullah, witnessed the public shooting and killing of Sarwar Hossain Babla. Law enforcement authorities have confirmed the identities of four individuals involved in the killing. Top criminal Sajjad Ali, also known as Boro Sajjad, has been named the principal suspect, along with seven named individuals and 14–15 unidentified suspects.

On Thursday night, Babla’s father, Abdul Kader, filed a case at Bayezid Bostami Police Station. Following the filing, RAB arrested two suspects on Friday morning from Hajirpul area under Chandgaon Police Station. Another person directly involved in the murder was also apprehended by Bayezid Bostami Police. The killing involved the use of a 7.62 bore foreign pistol.

Babla was shot during a public gathering in Chalitoli area on Wednesday evening. Video footage shows that after the first three bullets, Babla fell to the ground, followed by several more rounds to ensure his death.

According to the family and police, multiple killings in Chattogram have been orchestrated under Boro Sajjad’s direction. He has been controlling the city’s criminal underworld from abroad for a long time. Currently, Rayhan acts as his second-in-command.

Lieutenant Colonel Hafizur Rahman of RAB-7 stated that the arrested suspects denied involvement during initial questioning, though they maintain contact with other accused individuals in the case.

Additionally, BNP candidate Ershad Ullah was shot during the campaign. He was airlifted to Square Hospital in Dhaka via helicopter for advanced treatment. He sustained gunshot wounds to his right chest and leg but is now out of danger.
