New Leadership for Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association

The Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association has successfully concluded its biennial elections and council session for the 2026–28 term, ushering in a fresh executive committee. In a high-stakes poll conducted at the Ladies Club on Eskaton Garden Road in Dhaka on Monday, Kafil Uddin Ahmed was elected President, while Md. Saiful Alam secured the influential position of Secretary General.

The electoral process, which traditionally dictates the strategic direction of the nation’s private transport sector, also saw Saidur Rahman elected as Treasurer. While the association’s central committee comprises 121 members, the majority were elected unopposed; however, the apex roles of President, Secretary General, and Treasurer were fiercely contested, drawing significant attention from stakeholders across the industry.

Election Logistics and Governance

The proceedings were overseen by a high-level commission to ensure transparency and compliance with corporate and ministerial standards. Advocate Mamunur Rashid Roni served as the Chief Election Commissioner, supported by senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce, including the Director General and Assistant Director General.

Voting commenced at 8:00 am and concluded at 3:00 pm, with the counting process beginning immediately thereafter. By 4:00 pm, the results were officially ratified and announced, sparking celebrations and the traditional distribution of sweets among the supporters of the winning panel.

A Mandate for Reform

Following the announcement of his victory, the newly elected Secretary General, Md. Saiful Alam, addressed the media and the gathered council members. He commended the “disciplined and joyous atmosphere” in which the ballot was cast, interpreting the high turnout as a robust mandate from the transport owners.

The new leadership inherits a sector grappling with significant challenges, including fluctuating fuel costs, demands for better highway safety, and the ongoing digitisation of ticketing systems. Alam expressed his commitment to systemic improvement, stating, “Transport owners have exercised their right to choose their representatives. With the collective cooperation of all stakeholders, we aspire to restore discipline and transparency to the transport sector, God willing.”

The 2026–2028 committee is expected to begin its tenure immediately, focusing on bridging the gap between private operators and government regulators to streamline national logistics.
