New York’s newly elected mayor, Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, has declared his readiness to hold discussions with President Donald Trump regarding the city’s escalating cost of living crisis.
The Muslim-American politician — whose remarkable rise from outsider to mayor-elect has taken the political establishment by surprise — quipped during a Wednesday press briefing that “the White House hasn’t yet reached out to congratulate me.”
“I remain open to having a constructive conversation with President Trump about how we can work together to serve New Yorkers,” Mamdani said, suggesting that one key topic could be “delivering on his campaign promises around cost of living.”
Much like Trump, Mamdani centred his successful campaign on addressing rising inflation, unaffordable housing, and surging grocery prices — themes that resonated strongly with working-class voters and helped him defeat former governor Andrew Cuomo.
“I think the lesson for the president is that it’s not enough to diagnose the crisis facing working-class Americans — you have to take real steps to solve it,” Mamdani asserted.
He also criticised Trump for pledging to lower grocery costs while simultaneously seeking to suspend federal food assistance programmes during the ongoing government shutdown.
Having campaigned on ambitious pledges to make public bus transport free, cap rents, and expand access to childcare, Mamdani said, “What truly unsettles Republicans nationwide is that we will actually deliver on this agenda.”
On Wednesday, Mamdani introduced the five women who will co-chair his transition team. Among them are Lina Khan, current chair of the Federal Trade Commission under President Joe Biden, and Maria Torres-Springer, who recently resigned as deputy mayor under Eric Adams following the latter’s dealings with Trump.
