No Arrests After High-Profile Killing

Nearly sixteen hours after the fatal shooting of prominent criminal figure Khondaker Naim Ahmed, widely known as Titon, in the capital, no formal case had been filed by Wednesday afternoon, nor had any arrests been made, according to police sources. Authorities confirmed that while preliminary investigations are underway, the official legal process has yet to commence.

A duty officer at New Market Police Station, Sub-Inspector Siam Ahmed, stated that the victim’s family is reportedly preparing to lodge a complaint. However, as of midday, no written statement had been submitted to the station. He added that law enforcement had already initiated investigative procedures immediately after the incident and was actively collecting relevant information.

The killing occurred on Tuesday evening at approximately 7:45 pm near the western side of the New Market area, in front of a student hostel adjacent to Dhaka University’s Bot Tola point. According to eyewitness accounts, two unidentified men arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at close range, discharging multiple rounds at Titon. He collapsed on the spot with severe gunshot wounds.

Bystanders rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival. Witnesses further reported that the attackers fired several additional shots into the air while fleeing the scene, apparently to create panic and facilitate their escape. The incident caused widespread alarm in the surrounding area, prompting chaos as pedestrians scattered in fear.

Police believe the murder may be linked to longstanding rivalries within organised criminal networks. Officials noted that Titon had been active in the criminal underworld since the early 1990s, initially associating with local gangs before rising to prominence as a leading figure in organised crime. He had multiple cases against him, including charges of murder, illegal arms trading, and other serious offences.

A senior officer from the Ramna Division stated that no functional CCTV footage was available directly from the crime scene. However, investigators are currently reviewing footage from nearby areas in an effort to identify the attackers. Witness statements are also being collected to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Following his release on bail last year, he is believed to have gone into hiding and maintained a low-profile existence while continuing covert movements.

Investigators are currently exploring all possible motives, including internal disputes within criminal syndicates and possible retaliatory violence. Despite ongoing efforts, no suspects have yet been identified or detained. Officials describe the attack as a carefully planned professional assassination, likely executed by an organised group with precise intelligence and coordination.
