Legal adviser and prominent academic Asif Nazrul has clarified that there are currently no legal impediments preventing Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman from returning to Bangladesh. His comments come amid ongoing speculation about the political leader’s potential homecoming.
Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Monday, Nazrul emphasised that the decision on when Tarique Rahman should return rests entirely with the Zia family. “The family themselves are the best judges of the appropriate timing for his return,” he noted.
He elaborated on the legal standpoint, stating, “To my knowledge, there is no legal hurdle to his arrival. Should any issue arise, we are prepared to provide full support and will make every effort to ensure his safety and security.” Nazrul further expressed confidence in Tarique Rahman’s own judgment regarding the timing, asserting, “I believe he is capable of deciding the appropriate moment. I trust he will return when it is most suitable.”
Addressing public curiosity about the delay in Tarique Rahman’s return, Nazrul remarked, “Many ask why he has not returned yet. I find such questions distasteful. This is a private matter between a mother and her son. Speculating about family instructions or personal intentions is inappropriate.”
Political observers note that Tarique Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has spent a considerable period abroad amid political and legal controversies. Despite these circumstances, the BNP has consistently maintained that his leadership remains central to the party’s direction.
For clarity, key points regarding Tarique Rahman’s status and the legal context are summarised below:
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Name | Tarique Rahman |
| Position | Acting Chairman, BNP |
| Current Location | Abroad |
| Legal Status in Bangladesh | No active legal barrier to return |
| Key Supporters | Zia family, BNP leadership |
| Security Considerations | Legal adviser assures full support |
| Timing of Return | To be decided by Tarique Rahman and family |
Analysts suggest that while there is no official legal obstacle, the timing of Tarique Rahman’s return may also take into account political strategy, security arrangements, and family considerations. Asif Nazrul’s statements appear aimed at dispelling rumours of legal restrictions, reaffirming both the leader’s autonomy and the family’s pivotal role in any decision regarding his homecoming.
