No positive signal yet from India on Sheikh Hasina’s return: Adviser Touhid Hossain

Md Touhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, has revealed that India has yet to provide any formal response regarding the possible return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently sentenced to death for crimes against humanity. Speaking on Friday, Hossain indicated that Indian authorities are still reviewing the tribunal’s verdict, while Bangladeshi officials await feedback before proceeding further.

The adviser made his remarks during a press briefing at the Circuit House in Rangpur, marking the second day of his four-day official visit to the region. He stressed that the matter remains under close observation, highlighting the careful diplomatic channels being maintained with India.

Hossain was also asked about the potential return of Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He stated that the Foreign Affairs Ministry currently has no information regarding Tarique Rahman’s travel plans. However, he confirmed that Rahman’s wife is expected to arrive in Bangladesh later today. The adviser did not provide further details on her visit, but noted that the ministry is monitoring all developments.

In addition, Hossain addressed the situation concerning BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, whose planned travel abroad for advanced medical treatment has been postponed due to mechanical issues with the air ambulance arranged for her transfer. He emphasised that her journey will only proceed once all technical and medical requirements are satisfactorily met, ensuring her safety during the transfer.

Officials have reiterated that both Sheikh Hasina’s potential return and Khaleda Zia’s overseas medical travel are contingent on procedural approvals and operational clearances, underscoring the sensitivity of these matters.
