No Risk of Unrest on Victory Day, No Parade Planned: Home Affairs Adviser

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said there is no risk of unrest surrounding the observance of Victory Day on 16 December. He also confirmed that, as in the previous year, no Victory Day parade will be held this year.

He made the remarks on Wednesday (19 November) while responding to journalists after a comprehensive security meeting at the Secretariat in preparation for Victory Day 2025. The adviser said the overall law and order situation across the country remains normal and security forces are fully prepared to deal with any situation.

Referring to the political atmosphere following the death sentence handed down to Sheikh Hasina, he said some concerns about instability had emerged at the time. However, no disorder was observed after the verdict, and there is no indication of unrest linked to Victory Day either.

He added that this year’s Victory Day celebrations would be orderly and peaceful, similar to previous years, and expressed optimism that the overall situation would be even better than before. He reiterated that there was no plan to organise a parade this year, just as no parade was held last year.

The adviser expressed hope that people across the country would be able to observe National Victory Day peacefully and without disruption. He emphasised that the administration is prioritising public safety so that citizens can participate in the celebrations freely.

Responding to a question about the reported detention of a journalist without a warrant, the home affairs adviser said it is not appropriate to pick up anyone without legal authorisation. He added that he had heard for the first time from journalists that a journalist had been taken from his residence by individuals identifying themselves as DB officers and released the following morning.

He said the matter would be investigated, and any mistakes or irregularities by the police would be examined. If wrongdoing is found, appropriate action will be taken, he added, stressing that law enforcement agencies are expected to operate strictly within the framework of existing laws.
