Bangladesh’s band music scene has traditionally revolved around personal emotions, love, heartbreak, and the rhythms of urban life. Nokshikatha, however, has consistently transcended these conventions, transforming music into a medium of social responsibility and public awareness. Over the past two decades, the band has addressed pressing issues such as environmental pollution, human rights violations, and social injustice, establishing an indelible place in the nation’s cultural and social consciousness.
Origins and Mission
Founded under the leadership of Sajed Fatemi on 25 January 2006, Nokshikatha officially debuted as a band on 25 January 2007. Over twenty years, the group has not only produced music but also positioned itself as a sustained cultural and social movement, blending artistic expression with civic engagement.
“Initially, I performed street theatre through NGOs—on dengue awareness, women’s reproductive health, child labour, child marriage, and racial discrimination,” says Fatemi. “Later, I realised that music could carry these messages to a far larger audience.”
Purpose-Driven Music
Each Nokshikatha song serves as more than entertainment; it is a vehicle for protest, reflection, and dialogue. Themes ranging from river and forest conservation to women’s rights, child welfare, racial equality, and border violence are embedded in their compositions. The band has skilfully fused traditional Bangladeshi folk music with contemporary band sounds, introducing younger generations to the subtleties of folk heritage while addressing modern societal issues.

Their work exemplifies how art can be aesthetically beautiful while carrying a strong sense of social responsibility.
Nokshikatha’s journey illustrates the transformative potential of band music: spreading awareness, connecting generations to culture, and embedding humanitarian values through the universal language of music.
